Nathan Baker Keeps Trophy in North West

31 July 2017 by Chris Alvey

Nathan Baker and Eugene Chang Win Southport B Tournaments (30 July 2017)

Nathan Blake with the Hawkins B Level Cup and Southport Chairman Don Williamson

They came from all parts of the UK to contest the Southport B Tournaments from Edinburgh to Sheffield to Nottingham, Surbiton and Cheltenham, plus local players from Crake, Fylde, Chester, Bowdon and of course Southport.  The tournament involved two events of eight players each – Super B (handicap range 0 to 2.5) and a B Level (handicap range 3 to 6).

The Southport lawns were immaculate, winning high praise from many competitors.  The weather was kind, catering wonderful and everyone enjoyed their croquet in the summer sunshine.  Eugene Chang (Sheffield) was in excellent form, winning the Super B Manor House trophy in style.  The B Level went to the last minute as a titanic battle to clinch the trophy between Barbara Haslam (Southport) and Nathan Baker (Fylde), either of whom could have taken victory.  However, with his last turn Nathan came from 3 down to go to peg securing the trophy and a handicap reduction.

Barbara Young from Bury won the Symons Cup at the Edgbaston Handicap Weekend held at the Edgbaston Croquet Club on July 15th/16th

Good weather and excellent lawns gave a solid base to the weekend.

Tony Whateley began the defence of his trophy well with three wins on Saturday, being drawn to meet Esther Jones with a similar record on Sunday morning. She used her bisques well to win and now looked favourite to win overall.

Meanwhile Barbara Young lost her first game whilst becoming familiar with the pace of the Edgbaston lawns. Drawn to meet Esther in the final game of the event, she played the last of several fine games to take the trophy. Barbara showed a solid style in maintaining breaks and played some cannons well to establish them.

The illness of one of the entrants required some rescheduling of games.

Results: Barbara Young (9) 4/5;  Esther Jones (11)  3 /4; Tony Whateley (4) 3/5; Klim Seabright (6) 3/5;  Paul Trafford (7) 2/4;  Jeane Ackermann (11)  1 /3; Lawrence Whittaker (7) 1 /3; Nick Perry (16) 0/5.

Pendle Going to Semi-Finals of Murphy Shield.

A dull, warm day with occasional drizzle welcomed the quarter final match against Belay Hall in the national Golf Croquet Murphy Shield. The lawns were in good condition and thanks go to Peter Dewhurst and Will Drake for all their help in preparing for the event.

Christine Wood (3) captained the team and she was supported by Belsay Hall Chairman David Millner (3), Derek Johnson (3) and Brenda Johnson(8). Pendle again were represented by the winning team from the Ripon Spa match of Libby Dixon(2), Keith Terry (3), Paul Dowdall (3) and Will Drake (6).
