Brian Storey Wins Millenium Short AC Competition

26 July 2021 by John Dawson

Federation Millennium Shoirt AC Competition – Chester – 25th July 2021

Brian Storey with Millenium Short Trophy

The Millennium Short AC competition at Chester was keenly contested on Sunday by a small but select group of experienced AC players from Bowdon, Bury and Chester. It was a day of good news/ bad news. The good was that it was a lovely sunny day ; the bad that the lawns were lightning fast. One player tried to make light of his thin take off inevitably disappearing off the lawn by singing a pop song from his youth , ” Keep on runnin’ ”  – not quite as good as the 1965 original by the Spencer Davis Group .

The Swiss format over 4 rounds worked well with victories and defeats spread around. Brian Kerr and former winner, James Thomas both scored 3 wins and Robin Tasker, the tournament manager had to consult the ” who beat whom ” default. The match between Brian and James was fascinating; James took an early ball to rover but then had a frustrating spell of hard but unsuccessful long distance hit in’s as Brian slowly clawed back the deficit by cat and mouse tactics which threatened  both hoop scoring and the peels which he would need to do before pegging out. As time elapsed Brian was one up and won both the game and the overall competition.

James Thomas with Runners Up Wine

The winner took the trophy and both he  and James as runner up were presented with a bottle of the world famous Chester Sloping Lawn wine.  As the name suggests, the grapes must be grown on sloping ground – flat lawns produce flat wine, whereas sloping ground produces a wine  with an entirely different slant.  Once harvested, the treading of the grapes is a talent unique to players of the Association variant of croquet (far too complex a manoeuvre for devotees of Golf croquet).  I could go on, but suffice it to say that the whole process of production takes several years

A great time was had by all

Anne Alvey Holds onto Millenium Trophy

12 July 2021 by Chris Alvey

Federation Millennium AC Handicap 10/11th July at Pendle – The women dominate….(spoiler alert)

Ann Alvey being presented with the 2021 Millenium AC Hcp Trophy

Clubs again sent their representatives to contest this event, well at least the members who were prepared to allow their names to be submitted in these risk-adverse times.

Pendle lawns looked resplendent in the sunshine for the start of play, but player’s optimism and the clouds, quickly clouded over as a very heavy cloud-burst passed through. After three rounds (manager tried to push for a 4th ) on the first day, only last year’s victor was unbeaten..each of which was a timed win, the 2nd & 3rd being by the margin of +2t & +1t – what a grinder, what a performance!

Day two opened with the sun back again and during the fourth round, the manager took the opportunity to ‘correct’ an omission from last year – taking a picture of the winner hoisting the proper ‘Pidcock Mallet’ trophy (due to ’20 isolation we didn’t have it available). The interruption didn’t break her campaign challenge however – another win taking her clear of the field.

Round five – the match against her closest challenger (in effect the final), turned into a great match..both players expended their bisques sensibly but both ran out a long way from home. What followed could have degenerated into a classic ‘C’ class game of ‘Hide the Aunt Emma’, but it proved to be a real quality tactical tussle with the title going to (for the first time) the defending champion..queue another picture for this year’s gallery…

For the other place that gets recorded for posterity, the  runners-up spot, places changed throughout the weekend, and it came down to the vagaries of the Egyptian system to return a clear 2nd spot occupier at the death, the other woman in the field – Pendle’s own…Libby Dixon.”

New Croquet Law Book

15 June 2021 by Chris Alvey

7th Edition – Laws of Association Croquet

More games are lost because of lack of knowledge of the Laws of Croquet. The latest Rule Book is now available from the CA shop at £5.
This new book – The Laws of Association Croquet, 7th Edition, 2021 – is the culmination of several years of discussions led by the World Croquet Federation.

Here is a Summary of the Changes made in the 7th Edition – this was presented at a seminar in the South West Federation:
