Pendle Avoid Rain to Win at Ripon Spa

13 June 2017 by Libby Dixon

Golf Croquet Murphy Shield Pendle vs Ripon Spa 8th June 2017

Pendle and Ripon Golf Croquet players

The match originally to be held at Pendle and Craven Croquet club was moved to Ripon due to the heavy rainfall preceding the date. Pendle and Craven accepted Ripon’s offer to host the match to ensure it could be played before the cut off date. The teams were evenly matched with each side playing handicaps 2, 3, 3, and 6.

The teams were well prepared with full wet weather outfits for the torrential rain forecast. The mornings play commenced in heavy rain and high winds. Libby Dixon and Keith Terry contested the doubles match for Pendle vs Margaret Cowman and Freda Vitty for Ripon with Pendle winning 7-5, 1-7 and 7-3.

The singles were both close games. Paul Dowdall for Pendle winning over Gill Brent 7-4, 4-7 and 7-3 and Roger I’Anson for Ripon beating Will Drake 5-7, 7-4 and 7-5.

The afternoon singles play commenced in bright sunshine. Libby Dixon won her match against Margaret Cowman 7-4, 7-4, Freda Vitty beat Keith Terry 7-1, 7-6.  Paul Dowdall won his game against Roger I’Anson 7-5, 7-6 and lastly Gill Brent beat Will Drake 7-6, 7-6.

The outcome was a win for Pendle and Craven 4-3.

Libby Dixon thanked Fergus Thompson of the Ripon Spa hotel for the use of their croquet lawns and the afternoon tea they supplied.  Pendle look forward to progressing to the next round against Belsay Hall Croquet Club.

Wet but still worth going to Pendle Croquet

12 June 2017 by Paul Rigge

Pendle June Advanced Weekend – 10th/11th June 2017

Manager Paul Rigge presents overall winner Jonathan Lamb with the David Openshaw Jug

Eleven players enjoyed single banking on the croquet courts at Earby, but Saturday proved to be a bit damp – very damp – by lunch, Lawn 3 becoming unplayable due to standing water and on resumption Lawn 4 succumbing in a similar vein by tea – so double banking on lawns 1, 2 & 5 kept the workload flowing.  Sunday stayed bright and dry with all lawns back in service.

Good, plentiful food on both days – a trademark of Pendle events – as is the craic. A real fun event to attend.

Results:
Overall Winner for the David Openshaw Jug – Jonathan Lamb
‘A’ Class Winner for the Chris Clark Bowl – Adrian Kirby
‘B’ Class Winner for the Jeremy Dyer Bowl – Peter Wilson

Croquet and Trifle success for Pendle

28 May 2017 by Robin Delves

The only first round match in the 2017 Longman Cup competition took place between Pendle and Crake on the Pendle clubs’ courts at Earby, near Barnoldswick on 25 May.

Against a minimum low bisque team from Crake, of Messrs. Ian Hall (4), Jim Allcock (5), Ivan Wheatley (7) and David Lloyd (8), the entire Pendle team comprised Double Figure handicap players, namely Paul Dowdall (10), Robin Delves (10), Peter Dewhurst (11) and Libby Dixon (24 but playing off 20).

It was a very close encounter on The Hottest Day of the Year.  Four Courts were utilised, to avoid double banking.  In spite of this, there was at least one occasion, from both teams, when a player arrived at the wrong hoop.

Only Libby Dixon scored maximum points, winning her afternoon singles against David Lloyd (plus 24), having previously won the morning doubles, in partnership with Peter Dewhurst when Ivan Wheatley & Jim Allcock were defeated (- 13).

Both morning singles were won by Crake, Ian Hall (+ 16) v. Robin Delves and David Lloyd (+ 7) v. Paul Dowdall with Paul ‘s navigation of hoops in error. However, the Player of the Match award (the remnants of the Trifle ), went to Paul Dowdall – playing off 10 for the first time – beat the Crake number one, the experienced Ian Hall.  Ivan Wheatley was the only winner for Crake in the singles, beating Peter Dewhurst (+ 13).

The deciding game between Robin Delves and Jim Allcock was an error strewn exhibition, occasioned perhaps by heat exhaustion, Longman nerves & Anno Domini.  But the PENDLE Captain prevailed (+ 4), when Jim Allcock arrived at the wrong hoop, just as full time was called.

Final score: Pendle & Craven 4 Crake Valley 3
