King Rules Lancashire Golf Croquet

18th Lancashire International Open Golf Croquet Championship – 28/29 April 2018 at Pendle

Manager Abdul Ahmad with Winner Tim King and Runner-up Libby Dixon

I entered for the first time an Open Golf Croquet Tournament held at the Craven and Pendle Croquet Club situated in the small village of Earby.

It was a little out of the way but on arrival at the lawns I was greeted with the sight of four keen club Members and a very willing volunteer (Tim) setting out the lawns and doing a sterling job of trying to clear the lawns of the standing water.  After the valiant struggles of all, the matches got under way on Saturday at the appointed time.

It was very pleasant to be able to play competitive Croquet in such a wonderful setting with wonderful views around. The competition was tough but the weather was tougher I never expected it to be so cold towards the end of April.  Hot meals were provided for the players by Peter Dewhurst the Club Secretary on both days.

Despite the inclement weather, a very enjoyable time was had by all involved. Tim King who had lost to Paul Rigge in the All play All group stages beat Libby Dixon to retain the title for a second successive year. Libby had beaten a hitherto undefeated Paul Rigge in the prior knockout round.

l will be looking forward to attending again next year.

Pendle Withdraw from 2018 Short AC League

24 April 2018 by Ivan Wheatley

Regrettably Pendle and Craven have been forced to withdraw their team from the 2018 short-lawn league due to anticipated difficulties in raising sufficient players to meet their league commitments. Accordingly all their short-lawn fixtures for this season will be declared void which will result in no points being awarded to either side for any of their scheduled short-lawn matches.

Reaching such a decision like this is never easy and the team captain and officers of Pendle and Croquet club must be commended for the decisive and timely way in which they have faced up to their present difficulty for which we must thank them.

For the avoidance of doubt this decision does not affect any of Pendle and Craven’s commitments in any of the other Federation leagues and these matches will continue as scheduled.

Ivan Wheatley, League Manager.

In beautiful sunshine a good day was had by all the competitors at the Crake Valley Alternate Stroke Doubles Tournament.  The play was competitive with all games being close but the outright winners were Steve Skelton and Tom Ryan winning all their games.  They were presented with the Trophy and personal momentos at the close of an excellent day’s sport.
