THE AMAZING GREAT NORTH WEST FEDERATION FESTIVAL OF CROQUET 2023

28 June 2023 by Chris Alvey

(Southport 24-25th June 2023)

What a weekend!  The great 28th North West Festival of Croquet came to sunny Southport and did not disappoint.  We had everything – heat wave on Saturday, torrential rain on Sunday, then more sunshine, some great Croquet – plus the usual cries of anguish from clanged hoops and muffed shots.  Just about every age group was represented, from our youngest player aged eleven to the, well let’s say the veterans, and representatives of just about every decade in between.  There were really fit players and the crocked ones, bearing a range of mallets, from the super shiny ones gleaming in the sunshine to the scruffy ones much loved by their owners.

The kaleidoscope spectacular, with players in their distinctive club colours, hats of every description, multi coloured umbrellas, shiny balloons, and some players – over enthusiastic with the flush control in the portable toilets – adding Elsan blue to their uniform!

Southport have invested heavily in their lawns, the South Lawns were superb and the infamous North Lawns, much criticised in the past, are now the envy of many clubs.  Southport set out ten full lawns and six half lawns, to accommodate 39 teams playing Association Croquet at Advanced, Handicap and Short Levels, in addition to Golf Croquet at Level and Handicap formats.  The packed timetable resulted in 201 games of Croquet – no mean feat of organisation and scheduling.  Regular sounding of bells and hooters kept the GC on schedule whilst the AC relied on friendly cajoling and with all games finishing immediately time is called, leading to some frantic running around by players as games neared their finish ……… some players have probably not moved so fast in years!

Even the downpour on Sunday did not dampen spirits, as players had fun paddling in the puddles and even more fun trying to hit balls through them.  Amazingly, as the rain stopped the puddles soaked away quickly into the Irish Sea just a few feet below the lawns.

The catering, as always was fantastic, the wonderful clubhouse team serving about 60 meals and afternoon teas each day, whilst the ‘refreshment table’ did a brisk trade throughout.

And the Results Were:

Handicap Golf Croquet Competition – Fylde and Bury both achieved 7 out of 9 wins, but as Fylde had beaten Bury, they were awarded the much coveted GC Handicap Shield.

Level Play Golf Croquet – the Bowdon pairing of Jack Good and Simon Jenkins defeated all before them and took the GC Level shield with nine wins. Llanfairfechan finished 2nd with 6 wins.

Short Association Croquet – a fast moving very close competition with Southport winning 11 games, but Fylde edged it with 12 wins to snatch this tantalising shield.

Handicap Association Croquet – in an extremely close contest, Fylde, Llanfairfechan and Westmorland won 7 out of 12, but Bowdon went one better to grab the AC Handicap Shield with 8 victories.

Advanced Association Croquet – Bury and Llanfairfechan won 3 out of 5 games but could not catch Paul Rigge’s Pendle side, who were undefeated to take away the much prized Advanced AC Shield.

And the Overall Winner Was:

Four Clubs were joint second with 93 Festival Points – Bowdon, Bury, Fylde and Llanfairfechan.  The ultimate fanfair though, on achieving 105 Festival Points, congratulations go to the 2023 Festival Champions – Pendle – who were awarded the prestigious Festival Trophy.

Federation Chair, John Haslam thanked everyone for attending this spectacular event and also the inter-club organising committee of David Cornes, Tom Grievson, Rick Harding, Esther Jubb, Sam Seal, Rachel Snowdon, Tony Thomas, Martin Tovey and Liz Wilson.  He thanked the Southport Club members for their hard work in setting out everything at early dawn each day and of course the wonderful catering team.  He then presented the prestigious Festival Cup to Libby Dixon, captain of Pendle to much applause.

A great weekend of friendship and fun, some wonderful Croquet and memories to treasure.  This event is unique to our North West Federation and is simply amazing!  See you all again next year.

100% success at Crake GC National Qualifiers

21 June 2023 by Chris Alvey

Why 100%? 36 entrants from all over England travelled to the most northerly based CA qualifying venue in order to participate in Crake Valley’s C, B and A level tournaments (15th to 18th June). The weather was superb, the lawns smooth running with hoops that were challenging but runnable. Many of the players were returning to Crake but some came for their first time, all of them left having enjoyed the facilities, hospitality and friendly yet very competitive play.

On Thursday in the “C Level” Block A, local prospect Paul Galley (Crake Valley) impressively won all 5 games to qualify for the Semi-Finals with Jo-Ann Hughes (Bishop Monkton) finishing second with 4 wins. Block B saw two players each with 4 wins to progress, Sandy Grievson (Chester) and Ian Saunders (Bury). Jo-Ann and Ian won their semi-finals (7-2 & 7-3 respectively).

In the Final (19 point game) Jo-Ann raced into a commanding lead and was 9-3 up after 12 hoops. Ian then staged a tremendous fightback, winning the next 4 hoops to make it 9-7. Jo-Anne dug deep and secured the title on the 17th hoop. Jo-Ann’s handicap has reduced to 6 as a result of her success.

On Friday in the “B level” Block A, Tom Grievson (Chester) and Giles Pepperell (Llanfairfechan) won 4 out of 5 games to qualify. In Block B, 2022 winner, Neil Adams (Westmorland) was solid and clinical winning all 5 games with a plus 16 hoop difference. Second place in the Group was between Peter Adams (Guildford) and Frank Sharps (Crake Valley) with Peter edging qualification on Net Hoops. In the Semi-Finals, Tom beat Peter 7-2 and in the other very closely contested game, Neil beat Giles on the “Golden Hoop”.

In the Final, both players produced fine play with Neil just winning 10-8 to retain the title. His GC handicap has dropped to 2 as a result of this performance.

Onto the weekend and the “A Level” tournament. There was a late withdrawal and Robert Mumford (Ripon Spa) Handicap 6, kindly agreed to step up a Level, performing well enough that his Index finished intact.  In the Blocks Sam Seal (Llanfairfechan) and Charles Sale (Ealing) performed exceptionally well to secure 4 wins each and qualification to the quarter finals. They were joined by top seed of the group, Glynis Davies (Northampton) and Jane Pringle  (Auckland)

In Block A, Mark Buckley (Leicester) and Tom Grievson (Chester) were strong to win 4 games each to progress. The remaining two quarter final places were not known until the final game. Going into that round Tony McCann (Croquet Durham) and Giles Pepperell (Llanfairfechan) each had 2 wins. Top seed of this tournament and recent Cheltenham GC Open Championship Winner, Mike Bilton (Gainsborough) had only recorded one win and knew he had to beat Giles in his final game. Drama unfolded with hard fought hoops going both ways. On the deciding hoop Mike used his experience to produce the win needed to  qualify on hoop difference. Giles also scrapped through on net hoops.

With the Block top seeds both finishing third it meant for some unpredicted pairings in the Quarter Finals. Jane Pringle beat Mark Buckley (10-8), Mike Bilton beat Charles Sale (10-6), Glynis Davies beat Tom Grievson (10-7) and Giles Pepperell overcame Sam Seal with the same scoreline.

Both Semi Finals went the full distance, best of 3 games, Mike being just too strong in the end against Jane. Glynis was pushed all the way by Giles in a classic (5-7,7-6, 7-6). So the Final saw the top two seeds play each other, although both took an unexpected route to it. Great play followed from both but Glynis prevailed 7-4, 7-5 to take the Trophy (and add to her success at the Crake Ladies Open in September 2022).

Giles took 3rd place and Jane 4th with both players having their handicap reduced to 2 due to their consistent play throughout. In the Plate Alison Murray (Leicester) won 5 out of her 6 games to take the the title and a lovely glass trophy to keep.

The Club thanks all players and spectators for coming to our scenic venue, in the South Lakes and we hope to see you all again soon.

Cumbrian Cup Advanced Crake

13 June 2023 by Chris Alvey

Crake Valley’s first major Advanced rules AC Tournament, the Cumbria Cup was held on 10th – 11th June, attracting 10 players from many parts of the North West. Arranged as a strict Swiss format, the first day’s play saw Neil Adams (Westmorland) attain a strong position by winning all three of his games.

Although the weather was fine and warm for most of the tournament, the players arrived on Sunday morning to find standing water from some heavy localised rainstorms, causing a delay whilst the lawns were cleared with the Bowdry. Neil continued strongly winning his first game to have 4 wins, but at this stage Charles Harding (Bowdon) and Brian Medley (Bowdon) were each on 3 wins, leaving the final result wide open.

In the final matches, Charles narrowly beat Neil, but Brian lost to a fine performance from Ged Smolskas (Bury), leaving a two-way tie at the top. Charles and Neil were also tied using the allotted tie-break of the number wins of their opponents.

The result rested on the fact that Charles beat Neil in their final match (by 1 hoop!), so Charles Harding was declared winner of this keenly fought tournament. (Full results are on Croquet Scores)

Before the prize-giving, Pam Bevins kindly presented to the Club a superb bench with an inscription in memory of Dave Nick, saying a few words on how much her former partner loved the game of croquet. The bench will undoubtedly be well used and will be a fitting tribute to all the work that Dave Nick put into Club.
