Millennium AC Handicap – Chester

12 June 2022 by Chris Alvey

The Millennium AC Handicap tournament on 11th June attracted a field of only four. However, the quality of play was very high on Chester lawns that had turned into glass by the sun and gusty wind, (Keeping a long distance take off on the lawn was a nightmare).

In the first round Bury’s Chris Alvey scraped an 18 -17 win over his wife Anne (apparently the first domestic victory!!)

Whilst the rapidly improving Ged Smolskas (also Bury) comfortably beat Paul Taylor of Chester.

Ged Smolskas

In the second round Chris turned up the heat for a big win over Ged whilst Anne had a solid win over Paul.

Anne Alvey

The final round produced dramas. Against Chris, Paul ended a steady break by burning through his remaining bisques. Victory should have been easy for the lower handicapped Chris but Paul steadily ran hoops whilst Chris spent his energies on marginally missed roquets or blobbed hoops . The result an 18-3 win to Paul.

Paul Taylor

The final game between Anne and Ged was for high stakes; any win by Anne gave her the tournament whilst Ged needed a big win to take first place. When time was called the scores were level but Ged kept his nerve to score the winning hoop.

Chris took home the trophy his wife had won and retained for the last two years;

Ist Place

And Ged gained the runner up trophy (a magnificent seventy year old memento donated to the CA by the CA of Australia).

Runner-up

Some great croquet in very tricky conditions – Tournament Manager: John Dawson.

Many thanks to the competitors and to the Chester helpers for a great tournament.

Pendle Mid-Week Tournament

10 June 2022 by Chris Alvey

17 competitors turned up for the 8 trophies on offer.  The first two days were mainly class events with results as follows

Rose Bowl – A Class – Paul Rigge

David Jenkinson Trophy – B Class – Peter Thompson

Pennine Cup – Handicap 6 – 12 – Eileen Magee

David Hoyle Trophy – Handicaps 16 and over – Alison Larard

Whilst the B Class was well supported the handicap events were not so and Fylde member Philip Bass and Pendle member Libby Dixon came in to make a competition of it – thanks to them.  The A Class also suffered with the event coming so soon after the Counties.  Lancashire Captain and Division One survivor Paul Rigge really had little to battle against

After the first two days many B Class players went home and the remaining 8 were joined by local member Vincent George to put in a bit of variety.

This Egyptian Event was quite close with Eileen Magee winning and Alison Larard a close runner-up.

The Doubles was fought in an all-play-all block with 3 pairings all coming out on 2 wins each.  The final line of small print was net hoops and The manager Liz Wilson and her partner Debbie James came out the winners.

Peter Wilson, whose main purpose was to help out the manager and play as and when necessary came away with two trophies!

Egyptian Cup – Fastest Game

Addict – Most games played.

This was first tournament for Debbie James (Beverley) and Alison Larard and Denise Foster (York)  All three were slightly anxious given it was their first tournament and all three went away promising to come again next year!  What lovely ladies – you will be welcome!
