R.I.P. John Wastell 1947 – 2017
John Wastell was a member of Bowdon Croquet Club for nearly 30 years after relocating to the North West from London with Barclays Bank. There just happened to be a croquet lawn at Radbroke Hall, where he worked, and his love of croquet started from there.
He was a very keen sportsman and turned his hand to anything sporting, playing football, cricket, golf, bowls and marathon running. He played croquet to a handicap of 2 in his prime and won many club events but his greatest achievement was winning the Northern Week Handicap Singles title in 2000 and 2004 as well as the Northern Week Handicap Doubles title in 2000. He was the founder of the club’s website and was always keen to help out with any of the club’s activities.
In recent years, he suffered from Leukaemia and Parkinson’s Disease but never complained or let them stop him from playing the game he loved. He introduced his grandson, Will, to croquet and always hoped that he would enjoy playing as much as he did; Will has since progressed very quickly and John was very proud of him”.
The Funeral will be at Macclesfield Crematorium at 2pm on Wednesday 18 October 2017
