Crake Valley welcomed Yorkshire’s representatives, Ripon Spa, in the CqE National GC Federation Shield recently.

The visitors fielded a strong side in Michael Franklin (Handicap 4), Sue I’Anson (5), Marcia Henderson (6) and Robert Mumford (6). Crake relied on players who were instrumental in achieving top spot in the NW Fed (North) League in 2024. John Bowes (7), Karen Bowes (8), Brenda Knight (10) and Elaine Davies (12) took on the challenge of two rounds “best of free” advantage scoring format.
In the morning John and Elaine overcame Sue and Robert 6-7, 7-1, 7-5. Brenda beat Michael 7-3,2-7, 7-6 and Karen coming from behind to beat Marcia 6-7, 7-4, 7-3.
3-0 at lunch with four singles to be played and so the comeback commenced. First to finish was Elaine losing to Robert 5-7, 5-7. Brenda also lost in two to Marcia 6-7, 4-7. Fortunately both John and Karen were in control in their matches both winning in two games to secure the win Crake Valley 5 – Ripon Spa 2.

A long trip awaits in the next round (semi-finals) depending on who triumphs between Colchester and Woodhall Spa (who are due to play on 13th June).
