Southport B Level and Super B (Liz Wilson reports from Victoria Park, 22/07/12)

Sunshine at last!  18 players smiled their way through the weekend with not a waterproof in sight.  The manager even arranged a fly past by the red arrows (something to do with a celebration of a local BEN convalescent home).  8 players in the handicap range ½ to 2 ½ contested the super B trophy with 10 players in the handicap range 2 ½ to 8 competed for the B level Hawkins Cup.  Topically on the weekend when the new Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises” the B level was won again by Derek Knight (Beverley) who finished on 5 wins out of 5.  Peter Wilson (Fylde) was the runner up with 4 wins out of 5 only having been beaten by Derek on the first day.  The Super B was won by Gail Curry (Tyneside) returning to the game after a break.  Liz Wilson nearly won in the first game but managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory (-2).  After that Gail remembered how to play and upped her game beating all the manager put before her including Peter McDermott (Middlesbrough) +2 (T) in the final.

The atmosphere was friendly and jolly, the food was Michelin standard, the bar was well stocked and the local members were very generous in letting the visitors win!   Credit to the Southport club who have taken over full care of their lawns and it shows.  The lawns were as good as they ever have been – definitely worth a visit – next tournament “Open Advanced” 15th and 16th September – come and have a go at beating the CA Gazette Editor! – see you there!

The local newspaper (Southport Visiter) reports:

B Level Advanced Tournament

In a glare of bright sunshine, tournament manager John Haslam had to pick his way through a maze of level scores to find the finalists of the annual B-Level Advanced croquet tournament at the weekend – a B-Level event for low handicap players plus a Super B-Level for very low handicaps.  The event attracted well known players from Tyneside, Yorkshire, Nottingham and Fylde.  Southport players performed well, with several players entered at both levels.  Tony Thomas went as far as the final of the B-Level, but in a tough match saw the beautiful B-Level trophy slip from his grasp to the play of Derrick Knight of Beverley, a worthy winner.  The Super B trophy went predictably to Gail Curry from Tyneside, formerly a scratch player, who is making a come back after a serious injury.

Pendle Advanced Trophy Kept in Family (Liz Wilson reports from Earby 24/05/12)

Liz won the event with a perfect six out of six. Players from Edinburgh, Bear of Rodborough, Penrith, Edgbaston and Nottingham and Terry from Fylde were all swept away on her path to victory. When it came to the presentation the cup could not be found. Who could have been responsible for the heinous crime of failing to return their trophy? On returning home Liz discovered it on the mantelpiece, Peter having won it the year before.

Liz Wilson won the Pendle & Craven B Level Weekend (Fergus McInnes Reports from Earby 24/05/12)

Twelve players gathered at the Pendle & Craven Club on a dry but mostly cold and cloudy weekend for the club's 2012 B-Level tournament. The contestants came from as far afield as Gloucestershire and Edinburgh, and their handicaps ranged from Liz Wilson's 2 to Howard Bowron's 8. Four of the five lawns were in use – the fifth having a large puddle on it after heavy rain on the Friday night – and so two of the six games in each round were able to avoid double banking.

Liz Wilson and Alan Wilson (no relation) were undefeated after Saturday's three rounds, and so in accordance with the Swiss format they met on Sunday morning. Liz won that game, and continued her winning run for the rest of the day to finish the tournament on 6/6, with Alan the runner-up on 5/6. Clive Goode took third place and earned a handicap reduction from 4.5 to 4, while Peter Wilson, Lawrence Whittaker and the manager Fergus McInnes suffered some upsets and found their handicaps going the other way. Fergus started off well by going to 4-back in turn 3 of his first game, and finished well with a +26 result against Lawrence, but what came in between was not up to the same standard; he and Peter and Alan had triple peel attempts, but none of these succeeded. With 2.5-hour time limits, 21 of the 36 games went to time, with the lowest aggregate score occurring in Ken Jones's 13-12 win over Roger Schofield.

Results aside, everyone seemed to have a good time; thanks go to all in the club who contributed to this through their work on lawn preparation and catering.

Final standings: Liz Wilson 6/6; Alan Wilson 5/6; Clive Goode 4/6; Roger Schofield 3/6; Richard Way 3/6; Terry Vernazza 3/6; Peter Moore 3/6; Ken Jones 3/6; Peter Wilson 2/6; Howard Bowron 2/6; Fergus McInnes 2/6; Lawrence Whittaker 0/6.

Fylde Reach Longman Final

10 September 2007 by Liz Wilson

Fylde reach Final of Longman Cup by Liz Wilson (10/09/07)

Longman_FyldevAshby_07

Fylde played Ashby at home on Sunday 9th September for a place in the finals weekend at Wrest Park. The Fylde team were Martin Bradshaw (12), Terry Vernazza (18), Leonard Ainsworth (18) and Betty Bates (24). Ashby’s team arrived in good time and comprised Tim King (4.5), Derek Buxton (10), Mick Haytack (10) and Jeremy Staley (10). The bisques were definitely to Fylde’s advantage!.

In the morning Leonard and Betty paired up for the doubles match against Derek and Jeremy. This they won +2. Terry ran out of bisques too early against Tim who played an excellent game on our difficult lawns and won +6. Martin had a comparatively easy win against Mick +11. At lunch Fylde were 2 – 1 up and needed two of the afternoon games to win.

The afternoon games were played in handicap order. Terry won +10 against Mick taking quite a few attempts to run the final hoop. Betty could not find form and lost to Jeremy – 13. Leonard lost to Derek – 7. The final game between the two captains Martin and Tim was a tight affair which ran to time. Tim had trouble hitting in on our undulating lawns and Martin managed to keep him out of the game to win +4 on time.

A 4-3 win to Fylde who now go through to Wrest Park on 6th and 7th October.
