Lionel Tibble debuts and wins at Lanc Open Golf

3 April 2011 by Paul Rigge

First Timer Takes 11th Lancashire International Open Golf Championship (Heaton Park, 2/3 April 2011)

Lionel Tibble receiving the trophy from Bury chairman Barbara Young

Hosted by Bury CC and mangaged by Bury member Geoff Young, another great early season curtain raiser as 17 contenders met in kind mild spring sunshine, last year’s winner couldn’t defend the title, due to injury, so honours went this year to Lionel Tibble, playing golf for the first time!

After scraping his way out of the block phase he won the quarter and semi stage in 2 games at a canter until Paul Rigge took him into a third game as befitting a final. The consolation doubles was taken by Ray Mountfield and Bob Connop.

Bronze Course at Chester

23 May 2010 by Paul Rigge

Flying Circus Goes Bronze in Chester by Janet Davies and Paul Rigge (23/05/10)

An excellent bronze level training day on Sunday 23rd May at Chester.  Lead Coach, Paul Rigge (Bury), assisted by Ken Cooper and Barry Keen (Bowdon), provided insights into the game for the benefit of a group of 10 students (handicap 14-20) from Chester and Bowdon. In brilliant sunshine, amidst the idyllic surroundings of Westminster Park, a most valuable day ensued as they battled dehydration on the lawns. They particularly appreciated Paul’s appropriation of his refrigerator door for use as a magnetic board.  A very effective demonstration of the application of lateral thinking to croquet problems.  A good enjoyable day was had by all.

Bury, having made the final for the first time in our 21 year history, weren’t overcome by the occasion and lifted the trophy beating Reigate Priory 5 – 2. What a birthday present to end the season with at the third time of trying!! Bury won a single and double in the morning session for a 2 – 1 lead at lunch. In bright clear sunshine, nearly all four afternoon singles went our way but a sterling fight back by Geoff returned the closest result on the day.
