CA Diploma Awards for North West Croquet (updated from Oct)

13 December 2016 by Chris Alvey

Congratulations to Philip Bass (Fylde) and Lorna Frost (Bowdon) who were awarded CA Diplomas for their services to Croquet.

Philip Bass, Fylde Croquet Club

Philip joined Fylde CC  in 1997 and has proved invaluable to the development of the club at its new site within South Shore Tennis Club.  The Club started with three neglected tennis courts and one small 12’ by 10’ shed.  Flooding was a major problem.  Philip more or less single handedly dug a 68 yard ditch to drain water from the blocked underground clay pipes to a culvert in the road.  He supervised the dismantling and erection of a new larger shed bought from eBay and designed, supervised and, with help, built a very secure awning which has withstood the coastal winds admirably.   Recently he has plumbed water into one of the sheds.  Philip also maintains the machinery and has designed and built a tyner from an old mower.

Philip mows, strims and maintains the lawns and surrounding areas.  It is hard to convey the effort and graft Philip has put into the club.  Being able to advertise and run a CA Tournament with no fear of cancellation due to weather, having suitable facilities to cater for visitors and to know the lawns are the best we can offer requires confidence in the club and Philip has provided us with all this.

 Lorna Frost, Bowdon Croquet Club

Lorna Frost joined Bowdon Croquet Club in 1997 and quickly established herself as a very capable and able manager of many things.  She joined the Club Committee in 1999 and in 2007 became its Chairman, a post she still holds.

On the sporting front, since 2000 she has successfully managed the weekly club summer midweek competition with a flexible format system that caters for between 2 and 40 players.  The fact that the competition has become so popular with the membership is testimony to its inclusiveness and her personal friendly approach.  She has also found time to manage other Club events and numerous CA Calendar annual events including the “May Handicap”, “Northern Week” and “B Class Tournament” held at the Club over the years.

If this wasn’t enough to keep her busy, she has undertaken the role of Captain of various club teams, has played a prominent role in coaching at the Club, assisted with coaching within the North West Federation and providing and organising catering at Club events which has met with much acclaim from visiting players, officials and spectators.

Lorna continues to do all of these things in a friendly and jovial manner with a resultant valuable contribution to the sport, especially the Club.

Croquet AGM Keeps Food but Abandons Base

19 November 2016 by Chris Alvey

Executive Summary of Federation AGM held on Saturday 19 November 2016 at Culcheth.

Chairman Garry Wilson welcomed 31 members, representing 13 of the 18 clubs, to the AGM at Culcheth.  CA representatives Peter Wilson and John Dawson, updated members on the national organisational changes and whilst the much vaunted members database will not go live as quickly as initially projected, a usable version will still ensure all club members are moved into CA membership and start to receive the Gazette, early next season.  There is a Working Party examining how the Federations can be incorporated into the new management structure.  Three clubs have received CA Development Grants – Penrith (Trailer), Pendle (Mower), Craig y Don (Clubhouse Insulation).

League Manager, Tony Thomas, reported another generally successful season, sadly the A League is now defunct due to lack of teams but other leagues remain competitive and Level Play Golf continues to expand.  The league efficiency continues to improve with a significant reduction in the number of postponed matches.    At a later stage in the meeting there were two debates on changing the League Rules – Don Williamson proposed abandonment of the Bisque Base in Short Croquet (ie all games played to full bisque of 10) and games increased by 15 minutes, whilst Jean Hargreaves proposed the maximum Golf Croquet Handicap to be 12 in Golf League matches.  Both motions were carried after wide ranging discussions.

There was a club motion to cease the practice of the home side providing a luncheon in league matches such that all players should provide their own food.  This motion was withdrawn by the proposing club but then re-enacted by a member from the floor of the meeting.  A long and wide ranging discussion ensued culminating in rejection of the proposal by a small majority.  Consequently, there are no changes to catering arrangements for next season.

A continuing theme of the meeting was the problem of individual handicaps, the need for players to present their cards at matches, but more importantly the need for a more consistent approach by Club Handicappers.  It was decided to organise a meeting next March especially for Club Handicappers and any other interested members, especially team captains, to discuss strategies and standards.  It was also agreed that Federation/CA Handicappers could claim travel expenses from the Federation if they thought it necessary to visit events to assess/discuss handicap procedures.

Chairman Garry Wilson moved the Meeting should adopt a New Constitution as the current edition was no longer fit for purpose in the modern era.  This was carried by a large majority.

There were five changes at Officer level – David Walters (Bowdon) to take over the Secretary role from Liz Wilson; John Dawson (Chester) taking over CA Representative from Peter Wilson; Ivan Wheatley (Westmorland) taking over League Manager from Tony Thomas; Paul Rigge (Bury) taking over Coaching Officer from David Crawford; Liz Wilson (Fylde) taking over Pennine Cup Manager from Garry Wilson.  All other positions were re-elected.

The meeting concluded with presentation of League trophies to representatives of winning clubs.

The next Federation meeting for clubs will be the Spring Meeting on 4th March 2017.

We are all Croquet Comrades now

Coming Soon – biggest ever change to Croquet Membership

The Croquet Association have been working on plans to change the membership structure of the CA for some time – this will simplify the system and most importantly, include every club member for the first time.

At present, most CA members are classified as Tournament Members and pay £48.50 pa in order to receive the Croquet Gazette, Fixtures Calendar and eligible to play in CA listed Tournaments.  It is estimated only about 20% of club members are CA Tournament Members.  However, every club member does contribute to the CA via a Club Levy – at present, every club pays the CA £9.50 pa for each of their members.

From 2017, the membership structure will be changing dramatically:
STANDARD MEMBER – free to all club members who are then eligible to enter tournaments, will receive the Croquet Gazette and get voting rights.  This will happen automatically provided the new Membership Database (currently in development) goes live.
PREMIUM MEMBER – £40 pa – get priority discounted tournament entry, plus the Gazette and voting rights.
SUPPORTER MEMBER – £20 pa – means of supporting the CA but do not wish to play in tournaments.
CLUB LEVY – £10.50 – payable by all clubs for each of their members.

You can obtain more information from the Federation CA representatives – Peter Wilson (Fylde) or John Dawson (Chester).
