Brilliant weather, over 48 people, very strangely decorated Croquet lawns capped with players carrying Egg and Spoons or wearing Pirate Hats or firing croquet balls from ramp into a water container – nothing unusual at all – just another Fun Day at Southport.  This was team GB on the croquet lawns with a range of croquet challenges from the mundane to the wacky.

Competitors ranged from teenage to nineties as teams battled it out through 14 events, there was blood (one of the managers tripped over a hoop), sweat (as competitors nervously awaited their moments of glory) and tears (of laughter) as the afternoon unfolded to an exciting finish. Organisers, Eileen Gallagher and Tony Thomas laid out a circuit of entertaining games on the club lawns calculated to puzzle even the top players who were there enjoying the day.

A croquet egg and spoon race proved challenging with only one hand free to run the hoops, but not as wet as firing balls over a ramp into a bucket of water to demonstrate ball control, whilst a lively game of pirates where players wearing pirate hats stole each other’s hoop points, brought out the buccaneering qualities in everyone. Challenging teams battled it out through 14 hilarious events. It was an afternoon of sport, friendly competition and tears of laughter.

The winning teams were presented with medals to a backdrop of the Union Jack whilst the spectators gave a rendition of the National Anthem.

Gold medalists – Andy Sweeney; Brian Lewis; Maureen Jeffrey; Alice Dawson.
Silver Medallists – Ray Lowe; Lesley Winsland; Barbara Nodwell; Tracy Moors.
Bronze medallists – Anne Mitchell; Chris Sweeney; Malcolm Lunn; Terry Dunbar.

Lots of regulars plus a number of new faces made for a full complement of 20 players for Southport’s Super-B/B-Level Advanced weekend. The decision to reduce the lower handicap from 1 to 0 succeeded in attracting 4 scratch players. The range of handicaps neatly dividing into two groups of 10.

The winner of the Super-B was Omied Hallam (Nottingham) with 5 out of 5 wins, thus retaining the Mallet Trophy which he won last year. The runner up was Peter Wilson (Fylde).

The winner of the B-Level, and the Hawkins Cup, was Bob Burnett (Crathes) with 5 out of 5 wins. The runner up was Nathan Baker (Fylde).

Many thanks to all the Southport club members for their hard work in lawn preparation and the provision of excellent food, and in particular to the managerJohn Haslam for his usual calm and efficient tournament management.

HELP !!!

We do not have anyone to manage the Festival this year – can you do it?

Before you say NO, think about it, this is what you need to do:

* Liz Wilson will send you the team entries for each Croquet discipline
* You work out a schedule for each discipline competition
* Liaise with Southport Secretary to identify the lawns required
* Produce the paperwork to give to each team captain on the day.
* There will be Manager Assistants to help you on the day(s)
* All you need do on the day is welcome everyone and get them started
* Throughout the event keep an eye on results coming in from your Assistants.
* At the end, say a few kind words and announce the Winners
* You then receive a huge vote of thanks from the assembled multitude
* You go down in history as a hero, nay a legend, and with grateful thanks from the Federation.

Can you do it?  It is a challenge, but not impossible, and plenty of support will be available – Liz, Garry, myself,  in fact any member of the Federation Committee.

Interested ? – Please contact Liz Wilson (Liz@palnet.co.uk ) or Garry Wilson (garry.wilson@vodafoneemail.co.uk) as soon as possible.

Think not what the Federation can do for you, but what you can do for the Federation !!!
