New Golf Croquet Rules Coming

11 July 2018 by Chris Alvey

The World Croquet Federation have approved the 5th edition of the Golf Croquet Rules and these will be used for future WCF events. The Rules update has addressed known problems with the current rules and an attempt has been made to align GC Rules with some aspects of AC Law. The presentation style of the Rules is also closer to the style of the AC Laws.

The Croquet Association are responsible for the  implementation of  the Rules and at present it looks like January 1st 2019 at the  earliest through  to March 1st 2019 at latest.

There are some significant changes which will need considering at a future Federation Club Meetings in order to amend our League Rules (if appropriate) for 2019.

England Win Croquet International at Bowdon

16 June 2018 by CA Website

AC Home Internationals Hosted by Bowdon 9/10 June (Report by Sam Murray)

England won the Home Internationals at Bowdon, in fine Cheshire weather.

Some of the lower matches took a long time to resolve, with the dry weather exposing Bowdon’s bumpy lawns. Only England completed their three tests, winning all of them.

Scotland’s no.1, Jonathan Kirby, on a rare appearance, was the player of the tournament, not dropping a game.

Final Results Table

Position Team England Scotland Wales Ireland   Tests Won Matches Won Games Won
1 England  – 3 3 5   3 11 24
2 Scotland 2 –  2+ 2*   1+ 6 16
3 Wales 1 2+  – 3   1+ 6 15
4 Ireland 0 1* 2 –   0 3 9

+   The regulations declare the incomplete Scotland v Wales match as a 2-2 draw.

*   The regulations award the incomplete Scotland v Ireland match 2-1 to Scotland

Flying High at Chester Croquet on NCD

15 May 2018 by John Dawson

Chester Croquet Club gets a “fly by” on National Croquet Day – 13 May 2018

Beluga in Finkenwerder (photo courtesy of Airbus)

Chester members were enjoying the sunshine with a social last Sunday when we had a fly past by a spectacular plane – an Airbus Beluga. We would like to have thought the pilot and crew were merely flying over to watch croquet in action on National Croquet Day but in reality they were on a routine flight from near-by Broughton.

Perhaps I should explain: Airbus makes large commercial planes, notably the A380 plus series. The wings are made in Broughton but the final plane assembly is in Toulouse or Hamburg. Can’t stick the wings in the post so what do you do? The answer is an ingenious modification of an A300 into the Airbus Beluga which can take wings in its “belly”.

If you see an unusually large plane fly over your croquet club, you’ll now know what it is.

PS: an even bigger Beluga is under development to transport a pair of A350 wings in one go. The wings of the A380 which are too large for even the Beluga XL have to go by sea.

My thanks to Aeron Haworth of Airbus for providing the superb image and the accurate technical data”

John Dawson, Secretary, Chester Croquet Club.
