Terry Vernazza Wins Southport Jubilee Handicap (by Tony Thomas 29/05/11)

In a nail biting finish the weekend Jubilee Handicap reached its conclusion with a head to head contest between Terry Vernazza from Fylde and Tony Thomas of Southport. The match finished even, with both players on Peg and Rover, forcing the match to continue for the ‘golden hoop’. Both players hammered out chances which entertained the watching crowd, until Terry edged ahead to win the trophy. Despite the driving rain, strong winds and finally glorious sunshine, the weekend was a very enjoyable tournament, Peter Moore from Nottingham, on his first visit to Southport, was delighted with our wonderful hospitality and is determined to return for future tournaments.

Eileen Gallagher won the Swiss and Eileen Rossiter achieved her CA Bronze Medal at the by completing an ‘all round’ break in one of her winning matches.

Fifteen players and a dog came to contend for the ‘B’ level trophy on Saturday 21st May. Sadly the dog proved to be too fond of the balls to be allowed to stay so he and his owner went home. This left 14 to compete in indifferent weather conditions, a mixture of sun, rain and hail accompanied by a fierce wind which also managed to interefere with the balls occasionally. However, the contest, ably managed by Fergus McInnes, finally drew to a close around 5pm on Sunday evening in sunshine.

Peter Wilson from Pendle and Fylde clubs, having won 6 of his 6 matches played was the outright winner, with Phill Scarr from Middlesboro taking second place and Matt Holmes from Bury coming third.

Peter Dowdall R.I.P.

Peter Dowdall R.I.P.

Peter Dowdall

Pendle & Craven Croquet Club has been deeply saddened by the death of its vice-president, Peter Dowdall, at the age of 79, after a 15 year battle with cancer.

He was introduced to croquet by a friend at Gargrave and soon became a member of the newly formed Croquet in Pendle club. The club changed its name to Pendle & Craven Croquet Club when it re-located to Earby, a move in which he was fully involved from the outset. With two other members he fitted out the interior of the newly built clubhouse. Over a number of years he served in many capacities including secretary, treasurer and finally vice president, maintaining his commitment to the end.

Always outgoing and friendly he was a true English Gentleman who will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues in the croquet world and our sympathy is extended to his wife, Ann, and the family.
