Congratulations to David Cornes – new GC Referee
David Cornes of Crake Valley Croquet Club started playing midway through 2016 (after a “taster” session at Levens Hall) to encourage Father and Mother in Laws (age 80!) to take up the game. He enjoyed it so much, along with his wife, they joined Westmorland, played some internal games and then made a debut in North West Fed games in 2017.
He transferred to Crake Valley for the 2018 season and became captain of their first ever Golf Croquet team in the NW League. As the season progressed found Handicap dropping from 12 to current level of 8. Not content with this success, decided to become a Referee to improve own play and also help team members in competitive play – in the interest of fair play, always better to know the Rules rather than play wrong due to lack of knowledge.
Had to travel to Brighton for the Golf Croquet Referees Course at Sussex County Croquet Club and then scored a magnificent 90% in both the Practical and the Written elements.
Well done David, you may even encourage a few others to follow in your footsteps, referees are invaluable throughout our Federation.
