Pendle Open Golf Croquet Tournament 15 / 16 June 2019

The extensive ground work carried out on the day before the tournament paid dividends. The prolonged scattered showers experienced did not effect playing conditions, there was no evidence of waterlogging at anytime and the underfoot condition remained firm throughout.

Players approached the demanding scheduled enthusiastically and played expeditiously at all times. They weren’t deterred by having to put waterproofs on or having to peel them off at regular intervals.

Nine rounds of All Play All were concluded by 6.30pm on Saturday. Tim King was undefeated with David Widdison and Paul Rigge in close pursuit. On Sunday the high pollen count took its first casualty – Lorna Dewar who bravely combated the ailment on Saturday had to withdraw after 2 rounds were completed. The demanding schedule also forced 95 year old Will Drake to call it a day a few rounds later.

Play concluded at 5.15pm with David Widdison (Ripon -1) declared the winner with 13/14 wins, Tim King (Ashby -3) 13/16 was second, Paul Rigge (Pendle -2) 12/15 third and David Bell (Leicester Scr) finished fourth.

Special thanks go to Karen Bamforth who provided catering on both days including a barbecue lunch on Saturday cooked adjacent to lawn 2 whilst play was in progress.

Despite the indifferent weather, the event was a great exhibition of Golf Croquet played in an enjoyable spirit. Well done to all involved in making it a success.

Abdul Ahmad wins 2009 Millenium Golf

23 August 2009 by Abdul Ahmad

Abdul Ahmad wins 2009 Millennium Golf (23 Aug 09)

Abdul Ahmad, representing Pendle and Craven, was undefeated in all 7 matches and won the trophy.  Catherine from Fylde, who had triggered down to handicap 10 in the previous day’s play at Chester, came second with 5 wins, triggering a handicap of 9.

Although a rainy day was forecast, 8 players were greeted in morning sunshine for a great day of Golf Croquet at Heaton Park. All played all, as the weather freshened with some short showers interspersed with sunshine. By the end of round 6, Abdul had won 6 matches and Catherine 5. The final match between the pair would decide the outcome of the tournament. The score was 5-3 in Abdul’s favour at hoop 9. Abdul scored the hoop and his ball ran some way to the left of Hoop 10. Catherine sent the yellow ball to the Hoop and using the last bisque, managed to place it into the jaws. With a tremendous shot, Abdul dislodged the ball. Catherine’s red ball had been sent earlier to the West boundary just in front of hoop 1. If she could miss the peg on the left there was a chance to get near to hoop 10. Disappointed at the wasted bisque with the yellow ball, she determinedly struck the ball diagonally across the lawn (just about 2 inches right of the peg) and incredibly lodged the red ball into the 10th hoop.

Abdul then played his shot as Catherine walked back across the lawn. Catherine played yellow then after some confusion over ball order, Abdul smashed his blue ball from the North boundary at the red ball. The blue hit the upright and Catherine successfully ran the 10th hoop. Some minutes later, Abul ran hoop 11 taking the match 7-4.

NORTH WEST RETAIN PENNINE CUP (5/8/03 by Abdul Ahmad)

Heaton Park was basked in glorious sunshine for Trans-Pennine challenge match this year. Bury Croquet Club members set the hoops at the crack of dawn to ensure play began on time at 10 am. Morning session comprised of 3 advanced rules doubles matches. A 3 course lunch was provided by the Park’s Canteen Staff. Afternoon session comprised of 3 advanced rules and 3 handicap rules singles matches. Dave Nick made most of the superb playing conditions and recorded two TPO’s. The opposition were so impressed with the facilities that they proposed to hold next year’s match at the same venue. Such a comment from a visiting team highlights the standard of this venue and is a glowing tribute to the grounds staff.
