Matt Holmes Wins John Beach Easter Tournament

6 April 2010 by Barbara Dutton

Matt Holmes Takes John Beech Easter Trophy by Barbara Dutton (06/04/10)

Tournament novice Matt Holmes won the John Beech Memorial Easter Tournament. Matt, a young player from Bury, arrived with a handicap of 14, and took the Overall Winner trophy. He was also awarded a silver medal for running 12 consecutive hoops in a game which he won. Twelve contenders took part over the four days to win one of the five trophies on offer.

Local man Roger Schofield battled hard to beat Roger Staples from Middlesborough to take the Low Handicap trophy, only to find he was in a shoot out for trophy with level score with David Turner from Tyneside. They tossed a coin for which side to shoot from and unfortunately Roger lost out to David.

Joe Lennon from Glasgow took the High Handicap trophy. Liz Wilson of Fylde and Pendle took the Fastest Game trophy in just 48 minutes. Playing time is up to 3 hours 30 mins for each game. James Hopgood (Edinburgh) and Peter Wilson (Fylde & Pendle) shared the Most Games Played trophy, getting in 12 each over the four days.

The weather was mixed but mostly kind and players contended well with the odd puddle, unlike the member who drove onto the green car park and became bogged down and remained so in spite of several efforts to free him. Croquet whites do not go well with mud splatter, rendering those players, who offered to push, to a semblance of monochrome Jackson Pollock’s.

Paul Wiger wins Regional All England Heat

Paul Wiger Wins All England Regional Final (6 Sep 09) by Barbara Dutton

Fourteen players who all won their own club’s internal competition, battled it out to represent the North West (which for some quirk includes Lincolnshire) at Roehampton in the All England Finals on 19th & 20th September.

Saturday was a miserable day, with rain coming across the lawns in successive sheets, but the good lunch fortified the players for the afternoon session. The weather cleared in the evening and Sunday was cool but with hardly any wind and dry.

Over the two days the players played against each other and finally the winner was declared as Paul Wiger from Bowdon, with Betty Bates from Fylde, Eileen Gallagher from Southport and Janice Muir from Bowdon also going forward to the finals. Francois Garcia of Bowdon was named as reserve, in case any of the others couldn’t make the final.

Four players won CA merit awards.

Secretary’s Shield – Somewhere Under the Rainbow (19 May 09) by Barbara Dutton

Two teams competed at Earby for the opening round of the Secretary Shield.

The home team of David Pollitt, Robin Delves, Peter Dewhurst and Andrew Webb took on the all ladies team from Huddersfield Syngenta. The doubles in the morning were played in fair weather and Pendle came out 2 -1 winners. After lunch the rain was fairly persistent making the lawns very wet for accurate play, however the home team took a 3 -1 victory in the singles and so came out overall winners 5 – 2 and progress to the next round.

With the dark skies to the right and sunshine to the left we had a lovely low rainbow as distraction.
