Bury Croquet Club had to make a late change to the venue & timing of this year’s tournament due to contractors having been delayed by dreadful weather conditions which had held up work on both the Pavilion and lawns at the Club’s new venue in Whitehead Park. The tournament entry was therefore limited to numbers that Coronation Park could support for this Ascot Championship Qualifier.

It being July and not April, ( the usual date this Tournament is held and to which we will return next year)  the sun shone, the sky was blue and the courts ran at 15 plummers…what a test for the chosen few!….and yes, both last year’s winners were back to defend their titles (KO & Plate).

The players were all in a single block, all play all, untimed 13point games with the top four qualifying for the title run knock out (Bo3). A ranked consolation KO was available for those who failed to qualify, but these players preferred to sunbath whilst watching the gripping proceedings in the finals.

This tournament, marked another Bury first…the results were posted onto the antipodean site ‘Croquetscores’ as they were resolved, thank you to David Walters for doing this and also showing Jean how to do it .

Three of the highest ranked players and last year’s plate winner (going one better) qualified for the KO on Sunday, which started an hour before lunch – just as a light shower blew through…by mid- afternoon a right battle for the title was underway….

David Walters( -4)  versus David W—— ( -1),  so David W is the name on the trophy again.. but what an upset it’s Dave Widdison who won through this year after a thrilling final.

Woodward Worthy Winner in Croquet Golf Millenium

12 June 2016 by Jean Hargreaves

Fed Golf Millenium Trophy goes to Culcheth

Seven players from four clubs took part in the Federation Handicap Golf tournament at Bury today 12 June. The day started fine but unfortunately was soon to become rather wet. The format was all play all and all 21 games were completed before or as time went. All games were extremely well fought where most of them could have gone either way, several of them going to the golden hoop.

After round four two players had four wins each. However the eventual winner with six out of six wins was Keith Woodward from Culcheth. Congratulations Keith.

Following a late drop out, 13 players enjoyed the mainly fine weather and sunshine at Whitehead Park to battle it out for the Bury CC National B Level Golf tournament. Play was in two blocks, all play all, with many keenly fought games several of which went to the Golden Hoop.

The eventual winner from Block A was David Widdison (Bishop Monkton)with 5 out of 5 wins. Block B winner was Garry Greenwood (Chester) with 6 out of 6 wins. Garry played Mags Crossland (Sheffield), who had 3 out of 5 wins having beat Ken Eccles who also had 3 wins, in one semi-final whilst David played Keith Terry (Pendle and Craven), who had 4 out of 6 wins, in the second semi-final. Both ended in 7-5 wins for Garry and David. In the play –off for 3rd and 4th places Keith beat Mags 7-6. The final between David and Garry was eventually quite a nail biter. After hoop 2 it was 1 all. Despite good play from both players David went on to win the next 4 hoops making it 5-1. At this point Garry staged a comeback and again with excellent play from both players clinched the game on the Golden Hoop to win the tournament.

Congratulations to all and good luck in the final Garry.
