Pendle in the Rain (Peter Wilson reports from Earby, 06 July 2012)

6 July 2012 by Peter Wilson

Pendle & Craven Midweek Tournament

Left to Right :
David Marsh: The Addict, Most games played.
Eileen Gallagher: The Irish Cup, Unrestricted Handicap Play.
Roger Staples: David Jenkinson Trophy, Open Advanced play Singles  (C Class).
Paul Rigge: The Pendle Rose Bowl, Open Advanced play Singles and The Egyptian Cup, Fastest  win in any tournament including doubles.
Janet Davies: The David Hoyle Trophy, Unrestricted Handicap Play Runner Up  Handicap 9+

Sensibly not present Terry Vernazza: The Pennine Trophy, Unrestricted Handicap Play. Runner Up Handicap 8 and under.

Seventeen entries. Heavy rain preceded the tournament but with a little attention, four lawns were available and all that we required with double banked doubles being scheduled each morning.  Conditions became unusual. We played in warm dry conditions but each night we received rain of Biblical proportions. Clothing varied from full sailing waterproofs and flat soled deck wellies to short and t-shirt with bare feet.  Gradually the  water table rose making each morning a bit harder to clear. On day three we lost a lawn.

On day four the Met Office issued 1.3 Billion severe flood warnings about the impending Jet Stream crisis and the players congregated for the early presentations and to watch as the lawns finally succumbed to the majesty of Mother Nature.  Nevertheless we completed everything except the doubles final which will be played at a later date between Peter Wilson & Eileen Rossiter v Liz Wilson& Garry Wilson (no relation!).

If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year.
Do you suppose,” Liz Wilson said,
“That they could get it clear?”
“I doubt it,” said the Manager,
And shed a bitter tear.

Quote of the tournament!  Peter Moore overrunning a hoop approach – “Ooh I’ve found a dry bit”

Lionel Tibble Beats the Rain at Pendle (Peter Wilson reports from Earby 17 June 2012)

19 June 2012 by Peter Wilson

When play started it had been raining for 24 hours but we found four lawns were open. As the day progressed various showers passed over and we went down to three. The result of the changeable weather was a very slow flooding culminating in a six o clock monsoon downpour totally wiping out the club, Earby and most of Yorkshire.  Nevertheless much progress was made in the seeded knockout and many Egyptian games were played.  Everyone seemed to welcome the challenge, it was not cold.

Dawn on day two was ushered in by blue skies and sunshine, Miraculously drying four lawns and several pairs of trainers. Lionel & Phill started the best of three final double banked but were soon on their own with Phill taking game one before lunch. The rest of us played as much croquet as we could in the Sunshine. After lunch there were some head to head battles for the A and B Class trophies. Lionel had the best of the afternoon in the final.

Tip Top Flying Circus at Pendle

Flying Circus in tip top form at Pendle by Peter Wilson (15/05/10)

Players from Pendle were treated to a visit from the Flying Circus for a Gold Course. The lawns looked wonderful on arrival, newly lined and mowed, thanks to Robert. The course was run by Ken Cooper from Bowdon and if this was not enough, he was accompanied by International player Ian Lines (playing off minus two and a half and with well over four hundred competitive triple peels under his belt).

The course started on the lawns by looking at modern openings being used in A class play and the theory of the nuances behind them. One of these included a promotional cannon. This was followed by a discussion regarding 4-back leaves. The OSL, NSL, & MSL were all looked at in depth and in particular what to do should the lift be missed. After lunch, we concentrated on the TP. We did this by working backwards from the Rover peel and every opportunity to complete it that arises. The Penult peel and the 4-back peel were also considered in turn.

We split up and were given the chance to do it ourselves. Oh how easy it was for all of us with Ken and Ian whispering in our ears!  This wonderful day ended with a look into some top level thinking behind a typical three ball ending. We all chipped in with ideas but we seldom got the ‘right’ answer, what a marvellous insight into the game. The students presented the Flying Circus with Pendle Mug & Pen sets and an apple for each teacher. We are very lucky in the NW Federation to have the Flying Circus. It is working very hard this year putting on courses for all handicaps and disciplines. It was a fantastic day.

The following day, Ian & Ken went to Bowdon to give a Silver Gilt Course to 8 of their members.
