Riggy Has Done It Again

12 August 2019 by Paul Rigge

White Rose Open 10/11 August 2019

Callum Johnson (right with full bottle) congratulates Paul Rigge (left with empty glass)

Ever get that feeling of deja vu? Paul Rigge experienced it over the weekend 10/11 August at York Croquet Club.

He travelled over the Pennines to contest the Second holding of the White Rose Open in the rain, again.

Other entries attending came from Nottingham, Anglia, Luxemburg, London & Yorkshire, again.

The atmosphere and welcome was warm & friendly, again.

The Manager (Peter Thompson) ran it as a flexible Egyptian, again.

Weather conditions (bit of rain now & then) and Tournament dinner, at same place as last year… you get my point by now.

Even the same two players made it though the Semi-Finals KO to contest the Final, which by now you won’t be surprised to learn also ended with a 3ball ending just like last year. The title was again taken by Paul from a much improved Callum Johnson.. weird!

James Thomas Wins Bronze and Silver and a Trophy!

5 August 2019 by Jean Hargreaves

Bury Croquet Club AC Handicap Tournament 3-4thAugust 2019

12 players entered this tournament both from home and also from far afield of Huddersfield, Worcester and Penmaenmawr! Handicaps ranged from -1 to 18.

We had a lovely weekend with only a few drops of the threatened wet stuff on Sunday!

On Saturday play was in 3 blocks all play all. This was followed on Sunday by playoffs between the top players in the blocks and the best of the second place players. The other players played in a Consolation event, playing 2 games against people they hadn’t played before.

James Thomas (Llanfairfechan), who only started playing croquet 12 months ago and that was Golf Croquet,  was on top form. He won all his games +25, +24, +14, +18 and + 26 to win the tournament and also gained his Bronze and Silver merit awards in the process!

Everyone enjoyed the weekend whatever their own results.

Congratulations again James and best wishes for your future in croquet.

The Physicists of Croquet

30 July 2019 by James Hawkins

Paul Rigge and James Hawkins entertained a group of around 80 physicists from the University of Manchester on 24th July.

This was a repeat of last year’s golf croquet awayday for the research department. Three short lawns were laid out at the Chancellors Hotel in Manchester, players were kept busy for about five hours and the practiced hands didn’t break any mallets! This year, some of the keenest players ventured towards association croquet (or a hybrid garden version of it), with a resolution to head to Bowdon for more competitive play.

After two years, this event seems to be a regular fixture in the Physics Department calendar. The venue is scheduled for redevelopment over the winter, so a new location is being sought for 2020.
