Scorching Croquet at Crake

18 June 2017 by Liz Wilson

Cumbria Cup – Crake Croquet Club – 17/18 June 2017

Peter Wilson with the Cumbria Cup and players in the 2017 event

Only seven entries for the event this year, so Tom Griffith stood down as he had other commitments.  This led to an all-play-all format.  The croquet handicaps varied from 8 to -½.

There were some surprises along the way with Jim Alcock (5) nearly winning the event by beating Paul Rigge (-1/2) and Peter Wilson (1/2 ).  His downfall in the last game came against Dave Nick with one of his usual three ball endings. Many games finished with only two balls on the lawn and great fun was had by all.

The eventual winner on 4 wins was Peter Wilson with Paul Rigge runner-up on 4 wins but beaten by Peter.  Other competitors not mentioned in dispatches were Liz Wilson and David Lloyd.

We were all ready for rain but came away scorched!  Thank you Crake for a great event.

Croquet and Trifle success for Pendle

28 May 2017 by Robin Delves

The only first round match in the 2017 Longman Cup competition took place between Pendle and Crake on the Pendle clubs’ courts at Earby, near Barnoldswick on 25 May.

Against a minimum low bisque team from Crake, of Messrs. Ian Hall (4), Jim Allcock (5), Ivan Wheatley (7) and David Lloyd (8), the entire Pendle team comprised Double Figure handicap players, namely Paul Dowdall (10), Robin Delves (10), Peter Dewhurst (11) and Libby Dixon (24 but playing off 20).

It was a very close encounter on The Hottest Day of the Year.  Four Courts were utilised, to avoid double banking.  In spite of this, there was at least one occasion, from both teams, when a player arrived at the wrong hoop.

Only Libby Dixon scored maximum points, winning her afternoon singles against David Lloyd (plus 24), having previously won the morning doubles, in partnership with Peter Dewhurst when Ivan Wheatley & Jim Allcock were defeated (- 13).

Both morning singles were won by Crake, Ian Hall (+ 16) v. Robin Delves and David Lloyd (+ 7) v. Paul Dowdall with Paul ‘s navigation of hoops in error. However, the Player of the Match award (the remnants of the Trifle ), went to Paul Dowdall – playing off 10 for the first time – beat the Crake number one, the experienced Ian Hall.  Ivan Wheatley was the only winner for Crake in the singles, beating Peter Dewhurst (+ 13).

The deciding game between Robin Delves and Jim Allcock was an error strewn exhibition, occasioned perhaps by heat exhaustion, Longman nerves & Anno Domini.  But the PENDLE Captain prevailed (+ 4), when Jim Allcock arrived at the wrong hoop, just as full time was called.

Final score: Pendle & Craven 4 Crake Valley 3

Finalists in the Alternate doubles Crake Valley 8th April 2017- l-r Mike Patefield (Westmorland), Gail Moors (Southport), Peter Wardle (Crake), Tom Griffiths (Crake) and Tournament Manager David Lloyd

Crake hosted an inaugural Alternate Doubles Tournament on Saturday 8 April 2017.  The event was fully attended with guests from Pendle, Southport, Westmorland and good representation from Crake with a handicap range of 24 to 0.5 – only a few murmurs about the early start 9.15 for 9.30 am. We got underway promptly with eight pairings seeded into two blocks. After the first two rounds of matches it was all square in both blocks with everyone having played two – won one and lost one. People went into the magnificent lunch feeling optimistic that they could be the pairing that went into the final.

Roger Schofield (Pendle) with another accurate shot.

After the final block match there were 4 pairs on 2 wins.  The final was contested between Gail Moors (Southport) and Peter Wardle (Crake) versus  Tom Griffiths (Crake) and Mike Patefield (Westmorland).  It was still an 18 point game played over two hours, with Gail Moors and Peter Wardle emerging victorious in the late evening sunshine.

A great day out with four matches each, perfect weather and everyone focussed, determined and good humoured. The perfect start to the season for all players.
