Walters and Brandwood take Millenium Advanced Trophies

Several last-minute injuries left a diminished entry for this year’s NW Federation Millennium Advanced Croquet weekend at Pendle on 25/26 April.

Bury’s Andy Brandwood was the clear winner of the B-class, but the A-class looked perilously close to an every-one-a-winner five way tie between all five players. Manager James Hawkins broke the deadlock by failing an easy finish against David Walters, leaving Walters the block victor.

RESULTS:

A-class: David Walters bt Paul Rigge +16;  Dave Nick bt Colin Irwin +4;  Paul Rigge bt James Hawkins +13;  David Walters bt Colin Irwin +8;  James Hawkins bt Dave Nick +20;  Colin Irwin bt James Hawkins +15TP;  Paul Rigge bt Dave Nick +7;  Dave Nick bt David Walters +26;  David Walters bt James Hawkins +2;  Colin Irwin bt Paul Rigge +1;  Paul Rigge bt James Hawkins +2;

B-class:  Peter Wilson bt Roger Schofield +6;  Alan Pidcock bt Jerry Guest +5(T);  Andy Brandwood bt Robert Essler +3(T);  Andy Brandwood bt Peter Wilson +6;  Alan Pidcock bt Robert Essler +2(T);  Jerry Guest bt Roger Schofield +3;  Andy Brandwood bt Jerry Guest +2;  Robert Essler bt Peter Wilson +6;  Roger Schofield bt Alan Pidcock +24;  Roger Schofield bt Andy Brandwood +1(T);  Robert Essler bt Jerry Guest +5(T);  Alan Pidcock bt Peter Wilson +17;  Jerry Guest bt Peter Wilson +5;  Robert Essler bt Roger Schofield +4;  Andy Brandwood bt Alan Pidcock +4(T);

Robert Essler – First Croquet Tournament Winner of 2015

7 April 2015 by Matt Holmes

Robert Essler wins the John Beech Easter Handicap Weekend

On home turf Robert Essler won the John Beech Memorial Easter Handicap Weekend at Pendle and Craven Croquet Club. In recent years the weekend has also incorporated an Advanced event: the Peter Dowdall Cup.

When you enter this event you never know quite what weather to expect.  Good Friday and Saturday saw cloud and cold temperatures but not anywhere near previous years freezing levels and the last two days had brightened up. Monday saw some sunbathing. Many pink faces were leaving for home. There was the usual convivial atmosphere as has been the norm for this event aided by good food, a smattering of Easter Eggs, simnel cake and 3 different hand-pumped ales from brewer Matt.

Lawns were well prepared and looked handsome. However before the sun appeared on day 3 they were quite heavy with water that hadn’t drained well from the weeks rain prior and some holes in trainers meant changes of socks for those with spares….Hoops were still in firm clay ground though and set to the normal Rigge standard (not technically legal for Handicap but inevitable given the combined nature of play) and there were of course a few complaints of stuck balls.

8 competitors played in both the Egyptian Handicap and the Advanced all play all. Plus there were 4 others who only played in the Handicap.  Handicaps ranged from -1 to 16.  By the end of play on Monday p.m. two players tied in the Egyptian on the same score:  Robert Essler, a longstanding Pendle and Craven member, and Richard Forman, a relative newcomer to the game from Huddersfield Club.  Both achieved a CA Bronze Award during the tournament, the latter following his recent attendance to a CA Bronze Coaching Event – what a perfect advert. On the basis of ‘who beat who’ Essler took the John Beech Handicap Trophy. Forman showed great enthusiasm and promise and is one to watch out for in the future. Jim Allcock from Crake Valley also achieved his Bronze Award.

In the Advanced, things went pretty much with ranking, and also went to a Pendle member. No TP’s achieved – a handful attempted and failed – but this was mainly down to the defensive nature of leaves by the two minus players. Matt Holmes won all of his games and with some handicap game wins triggered to -1.5. Andy Brandwood from Bury played solidly and maintains improving form, triggering to 2.5.

Matt Holmes 7/7;  Andy Brandwood 5/7;  Paul Rigge 4/7;  Roger Schofield 4/7;  Robert Essler 3/7;  Roger Staples 3/7;  Terry Vernazza 2/7;  Barbara Young 2/7.

Nearly everyone leaves this Pendle weekend with something:
Fastest game: Paul Rigge (48 mins);
Most games: Matt Holmes (14);
Over 10hcp Cup:  Richard Forman;
Under 10Hcp Cup: Roger Staples;
Peter Dowdall Advanced Trophy:  Matt Holmes 7/7;
John Beech Handicap winner: Robert Essler;

Bookmark this event next year for a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

Graham Good Wins AC All England Handicap

14 September 2014 by CA Website

Quiller Barrett presents Graham Good with the All England AC Handicap Trophy
Quiller Barrett presents Graham Good with the All England AC Handicap Trophy

From Bury Croquet Club Website:

Graham Good won the AC All England Handicap Grand Final

Graham Good playing off Handicap 12 forced his way into a play off before winning the title with 4/5 over the two days. The winner being decided by shooting four balls for hoop three from the north boundary (1 pt for a wire, 2 for a jaws and 3 for a hoop run) – Graham managed to score the highest (8) using this play-off method so took this National Title.

In his third game he also gained his CA Silver Merit Badge.  CA President, Quiller Barrett presented the Trophy

From the CA website:

Robert Upton of Colchester Croquet Club reports:  The finals of the All England Handicap were held over the weekend of 13/14 September 2014 in glorious autumn weather in the serene setting of the Colchester Croquet Club. This year the Tournament Organiser, Peter Wilson, and the Manager of the Final, Colin Hemming, decided that there would be eight qualifiers from the area finals, and as a result the finalists were afforded the rare luxury of playing all matches single-banked. Also, being such a small group we got to know each other well, and a spirit of friendship and camaraderie developed over the course of the weekend.

The eight finalists were:  Nick Archer (Watford), Lucy Beach (Reigate Priory),Tony Elliott (Enfield), Graham Good (Bury), Joe Iddison (Peterborough), Alan Morton (Fylde), Christina Rice (Ramsgate) and Robert Upton (Dyffryn).

This year the handicaps of the finalists fell within the narrow range of 9 to 14. The maximum number of bisques available in any game was six, and as a result most games became open and interesting very quickly. The fact that four competitors recorded four wins and four competitors recorded one win might suggest that the competition was one of two halves. This was not the case, since many of the games could easily have gone the other way.

The award for brinkmanship went to Tony Elliott who had two “cliff-hanger” matches. In his match against last year’s winner, 15 year old Joe Iddison of Peterborough, Tony was on peg and rover whilst Joe was on peg with his remaining ball. Joe shot at Tony, missed and left his ball near to rover. Tony proceeded to run rover and peg out both balls from 6 yards to the applause of everyone watching. Against me Tony was one hoop behind as the clock entered its last minute. Tony rolled his two balls the full length of the lawn and danced beside them along the green, emulating his namesake Billy, in an attempt to beat the clock. Then after time he ran two hoops to secure the narrowest of victories.

Another exciting finish was in the match between Lucy Beach and the “cavalier” of the weekend, Nick Archer. Nick was on peg and peg while Lucy’s two balls were on rover. Being a zero handicap GC player, Nick had been hitting in with amazing accuracy throughout the match. But at the last hurdle his missed his partner ball and Lucy pegged out for a dramatic victory. Throughout the weekend Nick played in a free spirit, attempting hoop runs that most AC players would refuse. In my match against Nick I left him with a four ball break after playing an “air shot” at hoop five. Nick punished me severely for this error by taking his first ball all the way to peg, with two peels of his partner ball en route. This superb break earned Nick a Silver Award. The eventual winner, Graham Good, also secured his Silver Award during one of his Sunday matches.

The four competitors with four wins took part in a GC style “shoot-out” to determine the winner. I felt that it was a shame that after 15 hours of hard-fought Association Croquet the result of the event had to be determined this way. But in fairness to Colin Hemming his hands were tied and the method that he chose was clearly the most practical that time would allow. Graham Good secured victory by running hoop from the boundary with two of his four balls.

Before presenting the awards Quiller Barrett, CA President, highlighted some of the illustrious winners of the competition over the past 50 years. He thanked the members of the Colchester club for agreeing to give up their four lawns for the weekend and congratulated Georgeen Hemming and her team of assistants on the excellent culinary delights that they had provided (at least half of which had been efficiently despatched by young Joe, without any noticeable effect on his sylph-like figure!). Finally he thanked Colin Hemming for the highly efficient way that he had organised the weekend, sentiments which were wholeheartedly endorsed by the competitors. I would like to add my personal thanks to Colin, in particular for his words of consolation at the end of the weekend. I think that Colin was much taken with my comment that “you don’t learn much by winning”, but I claim copyright on this.

I have played many round (and oval) ball games over the years, but in none of them have I found such courtesy, integrity and generosity of spirit as in croquet, and I don’t know any other ball game where the participants act as their own referee. Why didn’t I take up the game earlier?

Summary of Results:

1st: Graham Good
2nd: Nick Archer
3rd: Lucy Beach

The above 3, plus Tony Elliott, all finished on 4 wins out of 5, and the result and places were decided on a tie-break

The North West Area Final (August 2014):

The All-England Association Croquet Handicap Area Final was held at Pendle on 30/31st August.

Gary Wilson managed his first event and decreed that our own Graham Good (back up to Hcp14) waltzed it with 5/5, so goes forward to the National Final in Colchester (13/14th Sept).  Alan Morton (Fylde) takes the second NW slot in the finals.
