Pennine Cup Stays in North East (Charles Waterfield reports from Earby 24 June 2012)

28 June 2012 by Chris Alvey

North East beat North West by 6-3 in Pennine Cup at Pendle

Pennine Cup Teams at Pendle – June 2012

Croquet North (once again without Yorkshire Federation representatives) won this year’s ‘battle of the Roses’. The NE team, led by Charles, retained the trophy they won last year (just as well, as they had omitted to bring the cup with them!). Lancashire had earlier been instructed by Paul Rigge (not present this time) to make sure they finished the morning session three up, which they duly did.

The usual generous Pendle lunch, and possibly the sunny afternoon (after it having been exceptionally wet over the previous days), must have reinvigorated the NE contingent, because all the afternoon singles went their way –in the end!

Many thanks owed to all the Pendle members for making three lawns available, setting out the equipment and being so hospitable once again.

Teams:
NW Fed: James Hawkins (½), Roger Schofield (2.5), Dennis Graham (3), Mike Steer (4), Terry Vernazza (6), Sylvia Steer (7).
NE Fed: Charles Waterfield (½), Phil Errington (2.5), Peter McDermott (2.5), Roger Staples (4.5), David Turner (7) & Alice Fleck (12).

Results (NE names first):
Doubles: Charles & Alice lost to Dennis & Mike 16-22T; Phil & Roger lost to James & Sylvia -15, Peter & David lost to Roger 16-23T.
Singles: Charles beat James +8, Phil beat Roger +3, Peter beat Dennis 19-10T, Roger beat Mike +17, David beat Terry 24-23T, Alice beat Sylvia 20-17T.
[Roger Staples’ HC changed from 4.5 to 4]

Lionel Tibble Beats the Rain at Pendle (Peter Wilson reports from Earby 17 June 2012)

19 June 2012 by Peter Wilson

When play started it had been raining for 24 hours but we found four lawns were open. As the day progressed various showers passed over and we went down to three. The result of the changeable weather was a very slow flooding culminating in a six o clock monsoon downpour totally wiping out the club, Earby and most of Yorkshire.  Nevertheless much progress was made in the seeded knockout and many Egyptian games were played.  Everyone seemed to welcome the challenge, it was not cold.

Dawn on day two was ushered in by blue skies and sunshine, Miraculously drying four lawns and several pairs of trainers. Lionel & Phill started the best of three final double banked but were soon on their own with Phill taking game one before lunch. The rest of us played as much croquet as we could in the Sunshine. After lunch there were some head to head battles for the A and B Class trophies. Lionel had the best of the afternoon in the final.

Round 1:  Mike Town beat Dennis Scarr +6;  Matt Holmes beat Norman Hicks +20;  Peter Wilson beat Roger Schofield +3;  Peter McDermot beat Liz Wilson +1;  Phill Scarr beat Roger Staples +14 TP;  Lionel Tibble beat Malcolm Daines +26TP.
Round 2: Matt Holmes beat Dave Nick +17 TP;  Lionel Tibble beat Peter Wilson +24;  Mike Town beat Lee Hartley +1;  Phil Scarr beat Peter McDermott +16 TP.
Consolation:  Lee Hartley beat Dave Nick +3 TP;  Norman Hicks beat Malcom Daines +17;  Dennis Scarr beat Roger Staples +6;  Dave Nick beat Liz Wilson +1;  Matt Holmes beat Roger Schofield +24 TP;  Lionel Tibble beat Phill Scarr +6;  Peter McDermott beat Norman Hicks +6;  Roger Schofield beat Malcolm Daines +8;  Mike Town beat Matt Holmes +14;  Dave Nick beat Dennis Scarr +26;  Dave Nick beat Peter Wilson +13;  Phill Scarr beat Mike Town +10;  Matt Holmes beat Dennis Scarr +22.
Semi Finals: Phill Scarr beat Mike Town +10;  Lionel Tibble beat Matt Holmes +17.

Pendle Advanced Trophy Kept in Family (Liz Wilson reports from Earby 24/05/12)

Liz won the event with a perfect six out of six. Players from Edinburgh, Bear of Rodborough, Penrith, Edgbaston and Nottingham and Terry from Fylde were all swept away on her path to victory. When it came to the presentation the cup could not be found. Who could have been responsible for the heinous crime of failing to return their trophy? On returning home Liz discovered it on the mantelpiece, Peter having won it the year before.

Liz Wilson won the Pendle & Craven B Level Weekend (Fergus McInnes Reports from Earby 24/05/12)

Twelve players gathered at the Pendle & Craven Club on a dry but mostly cold and cloudy weekend for the club's 2012 B-Level tournament. The contestants came from as far afield as Gloucestershire and Edinburgh, and their handicaps ranged from Liz Wilson's 2 to Howard Bowron's 8. Four of the five lawns were in use – the fifth having a large puddle on it after heavy rain on the Friday night – and so two of the six games in each round were able to avoid double banking.

Liz Wilson and Alan Wilson (no relation) were undefeated after Saturday's three rounds, and so in accordance with the Swiss format they met on Sunday morning. Liz won that game, and continued her winning run for the rest of the day to finish the tournament on 6/6, with Alan the runner-up on 5/6. Clive Goode took third place and earned a handicap reduction from 4.5 to 4, while Peter Wilson, Lawrence Whittaker and the manager Fergus McInnes suffered some upsets and found their handicaps going the other way. Fergus started off well by going to 4-back in turn 3 of his first game, and finished well with a +26 result against Lawrence, but what came in between was not up to the same standard; he and Peter and Alan had triple peel attempts, but none of these succeeded. With 2.5-hour time limits, 21 of the 36 games went to time, with the lowest aggregate score occurring in Ken Jones's 13-12 win over Roger Schofield.

Results aside, everyone seemed to have a good time; thanks go to all in the club who contributed to this through their work on lawn preparation and catering.

Final standings: Liz Wilson 6/6; Alan Wilson 5/6; Clive Goode 4/6; Roger Schofield 3/6; Richard Way 3/6; Terry Vernazza 3/6; Peter Moore 3/6; Ken Jones 3/6; Peter Wilson 2/6; Howard Bowron 2/6; Fergus McInnes 2/6; Lawrence Whittaker 0/6.
