Another Successful Pendle Tournament

10 May 2021 by Liz Wilson

Pendle B and C Level Tournament 8th and 9th May

Lorna Dewar with the B Class Trophy and Manager Peter Wilson

Twelve competitors were divided into two blocks of 6 all play all.  Lorna Dewar (1½ ) fresh from her first triple and win over James Hopgood in Edinburgh last weekend, was the favourite in the B Class and so it proved with 4 wins beating Steve Skelton also on 4 wins but winning the clash between the two of them. The C Class was won by Roger Staples winning all games in his block.

Special mention to Philip Jay and John Henderson in their first Advanced Competition.

The lawns were complimented and stood up to the continuous rain on Saturday.  Sunday proved much brighter.

Thanks to the manager Peter Wilson who ensured everything ran smoothly and entertained with two spectacular contact leaves, one with all 4 balls in contact in the middle of the lawn!

Wine for the Winners at Tournaments in Pendle Sunshine

26 April 2021 by Paul Rigge

Spring One Day Tournaments at Pendle 24/25 April 2021

Spring AC Day Tournament – 24th April
Another Covid Milestone passed this week – we’re now allowed to cater again, well outside dinning only, but small steps are returning life back to normal (ish).

The new flagged area was thus utilized as our ‘Beer Garden’ for both lunch & tea service for the lucky few who had pre-booked meals…- also back by popular demand was the pre-play Bacon Buttie service so well received in the Heaton Park days!

Association Croquet – ‘the game in decline’ – was fully booked, with entries from Fylde, Bury, Keswick, Southport and Pendle. The event was split into a Handicap Knock-Out and a ‘free-for-all’ Egyptian, playing a mixture of Handicap and Advanced formats.

The day progressed as expected with both divisions being won by competitors from a single club – Fylde Croquet Club – by players Lee Hartley and Phil Snowden. (Sure it’s just coincidence that Riggey had held his first coaching clinic at Flyde this Thursday).

Spring GC Day Tournament – 25th April
Having swapped the days about from their Easter running order, it was the turn of Golf Croquet to use the Pendle Courts. The Manager was really disappointed with the number of entries – only two were non Pendle members, he thought Golf was popular, the weather was perfect so he was at a loss to understand so few entering.

Again the easiest play format to fill the day with play for the competitors was an all play all ’round robin’. The players chose to use the WCF Trial Handicapping method instead of ‘CA Extra Turns’. As Games were not being ‘carded’, play tended to be more adventurous – hoop 10 being scored from just north of C4 for example. Good to see.

Everyone managed at least two wins but two players dominated, winning six of their seven games each. It required Net Hoops to separate them, our own Karen Bamforth from Pendle took home the winners wine.

New: 24/25 April – One Day Croquet Events at Pendle

7 April 2021 by Paul Rigge

Two One Day Croquet Tournaments 24/25 April in Pendle

Over Easter the Pendle Croquet Club hosted two single one day events. Both proved to be so popular and feed-back from attendees demanded more of the same. To satisfy this pent-up demand, it is proposed to offer;

TWO DISTINCT ONE-DAY EVENTS:

AC Croquet Competition Saturday 24th April:
Propose a mix of Level & Handicap play, depending upon Entries.

and

Golf Croquet Competition Sunday 25th April:
Propose a mix of Level & Handicap play, depending upon Entries.

Covid guidelines state that ‘organised’ sporting events can be legally held and from 12th April, outdoor catering can re-commence. In addition the Village Buttie Shop will be Open on the Saturday.

Obviously, you will need to consider your commute to Pendle Club to attend these events, for example you might prefer not to car share. Pendle provide Covid Safe arena for play and supply; ‘owned’ Personal chairs, Extra Spaced cover, antibacterial equipment wipes, external brew stuff etc…

So if you fancy hitting balls about in competition as a season starter then please notify Liz Wilson (Liz@palnet.co.uk) to enter either (or both).

Costs:
 Tournament entry fee – per player – £10.00/day (members £8)
 Lunches (hot food and days drinks) – £10.00/day or
 Bottomless tea/coffee/squash only – £3.00/day

Please, in the first instance, register your place so level of interest can be assessed, indicating interest in lunch provision too.
