New Westmorland star wins Short Millenium

31 May 2015 by Peter Wilson

NWFCC MILLENNIUM SHORT CROQUET 2015 (Sponsored by Aspire-TS, Newcastle Upon Tyne).

The tournament was a one day individual singles short lawn event held on Saturday 30th May 2015 the games limited to 75 Minutes base 4.

The emphasis on a friendly competition with players wearing their Federation Colours.  In addition to Fylde’s entries, clubs sent players from Bowdon, Bury, Chester, Penrith and Westmorland.  The general tenor of the event is friendly competition and suitable for newcomers to tournaments but also the experienced players may feel at home here. The weather cool and Sunny, the food warm and homely.

Following on from a three round block eliminator, in the semi finals, last years runner up Mike Miller from Chester beat Bowdon’s John Lucas and David Lloyd from Westmorland beat the experienced Chris Evans from Bowdon.

With the spectators in place enjoying their afternoon teas the final started and Mike soon took a chance to get his first ball to the peg. The game took an exciting turn when David responded with a great break and pegged Mike’s first ball out of the game. And so, much to the interest of those watching, the cat and mouse started, David established a three point lead. Then with sharp tactical awareness took a chance to enter a two ball end game. Now with his back to the wall and time running out Mike made the shot of the day with a fourteen yard roll to hoop two which he then ran to the boundary leaving a rush to hoop three which he also made. He managed to get to ten feet in front of hoop four, if he could run this he would be level and, with being in play, have the advantage, but it was a big ask and in missing the shot retained the runners up trophy for a second year.

A good result for David in his first year. His play is improving rapidly, he looks the part and we look forward to seeing him back next year to defend the trophy.

Lancashire Lasses Score at Croquet Inter-Counties

27 May 2015 by Liz Wilson

Lancashire Top Division 2  at the Inter Counties Croquet

2015_Lancashire_Team

North West Players Matt Holmes, James Hawkins and Liz Wilson travelled to The South Coast to compete in this tournament.  They were joined by Lancashire born Ailsa Lines, Annabel McDiarmid and David Openshaw to form the first ever team of six comprising of three women and three men.  Paul Rigge travelled down to play for one day whilst Captain David Openshaw went AWOL to watch Burnley’s last football match in the Premier League.  Having been relegated last year the Lancashire team were keen to gain promotion and this they did in some style only narrowly losing in two of the ten matches and finishing top of Division two.  The format was advanced doubles with each match consisting of three games.  The pairings did vary but mainly Pair one was David Openshaw (ex MacRob Captain) and Matt Holmes (who is currently being mentored by David for the GB Squad), pair two Ailsa Lines and Annabel McDiarmid (not a pleasant experience for most being beaten by two “girls”) and pair three James Hawkins and Mrs Wilson.  Much bemusement at team swapping when Liz was always named as Mrs Wilson (an in joke relating to her on line poker name!)  The pairings were strong and no pairing lost more than one game – only 5 games were lost in all out of 30 played.

Huddersfield Hero wins Southport Croquet weekend

Southport Handicap Croquet Weekend Tournament  23/24 May 2015

Don Williamson (Southport Chairman) presents the Jubilee Handicap Tankard to winner Richard Foreman (Huddersfield)
Don Williamson (Southport Chairman) presents the Jubilee Handicap Tankard to winner Richard Forman (Huddersfield)

On Saturday they assembled in Victoria Park in glorious weather, six local players along with visitors from Glasgow, Huddersfield, Bowdon, Chester and Fylde, to contest a popular open annual croquet handicap tournament. Don Williamson was acting as Tournament Manager and play progressed well on the wonderfully manicured Southport lawns which were attracting praise from all quarters. But by the close of the first day the local players – last year’s winner Alan Farrell, Carol Lewis, Brian Lewis, Don Williamson, Eileen Gallagher and Eileen Rossiter, were left comparing their suntans as a stranger from Huddersfield had everyone floundering in his wake.

Young Richard Forman from Huddersfield, on his first visit to the Southport club demonstrated excellent play, well above the level suggested by his Handicap and led the pack all day.

Sunday dawned cooler and wet as Don Williamson and Carol Lewis put forward a valiant challenge to the overnight leader. Carol gained a handicap reduction through the quality of her play, but to no avail as the guy from Huddersfield continued his superb form and remained undefeated throughout the tournament to win the Jubilee Tankard. Don Williamson, who had played well throughout, had to accept second place in spite of losing only one game in the two days.

Another honour then befell Richard as his excellent play gave him a massive handicap reduction to 10.
