Why Not Join a Croquet Referrees Course

9 February 2014 by Chris Alvey

REFEREES COURSES AT BOWDON

Subject to a minimum attendance of 6 for each course, Barry Keen will hold a two day Association Croquet Referees Course on 15/16 March and a one day GC Referees Course on Sunday 23 March.  Both courses will be held at Bowdon CC starting at 10.00 and ending at about 1600 on each day.  The course fee will be £10 which includes tea, coffee and biscuits throughout the day.  However, there will be no provision of lunch so attendees should bring a packed lunch as the lunch break will be too short to permit going out to lunch.  A cash bar will be available.

Attendees should bring flat soled shoes and waterproofs as an important part of both courses is the training on the lawns.

There will be no time for examinations on these days.  Any candidate wishing to be examined will be offered a mutually convenient later date.

The courses are primarily aimed at players who wish to become Referees, but a player who just has an interest in the laws without becoming a Referee will also be welcome. There are no limits on the handicap of Referees, although experience suggests that it is unlikely (though not impossible) that candidates with a double figure handicap will not have enough experience to become full AC Referees.

The final decision on whether there is sufficient interest will be made at the Federation Spring Meeting on 8 March unless sufficient interest is shown before.

Players intending to attend should email Barry as soon as possible so that pre-course paperwork and homework can be sent out.

Attendees should bring an up to date version of the Laws, and the Commentary on the Laws (included in the GC Laws; AC should be downloaded from the CA website).

Honours for North West Croquet at National AGM

11 November 2013 by Chris Alvey

 Three awards for the North West at the Croquet Association AGM

At the Croquet Association AGM in October, three CA Awards were presented to Fylde Croquet Club, Ken Cooper and Francois Garcia.

2013 Fylde Apps HeleyApps Heley Award – Fylde Croquet Club

The Apps Heley Award for improvements to clubs with three or four lawns was awarded jointly to Fylde CC and West Worthing CC.

Fylde was formed in 1986 and in the last two years has:
– Developed a third lawn from two disused grass tennis courts, using members’ labour;
– Taken on the maintenance of its lawns, again using volunteer labour and funded the purchase of machinery;
– Built a new clubhouse and played a full part in the North West Federation;
– Hosted its first CA Handicap trophy and the international match between the CA and the CA of Ireland;

Ken Cooper Coaching Silver Course

Lifetime Coaching Award – Ken Cooper of Bowdon CC

Ken has only been the NW Federations Coaching Officer for the last three years and in that time he has totally revolutonised the ‘thinking and active involvement’ of all our Clubs and individual players into the benefits of good progressive, croquet coaching.  Ken was charged with the job of changing player’s attitude towards competitive play and thereby help develop the quality of our League Games throughout the NWFCC Region. He set about this in earnest by gathering together several of the Federations other coaches and getting their support to assist him in running courses at the various levels required.

2013 Francois Garcia

Steel Bowl – Francois Garcia of Bowdon CC

Awarded to the most improved female Association Croquet Player in 2012.

Francois started the 2012 season on a handicap of 4 after having had a successful season in 2011 culminating in winning the Bowdon B-level event.  In 2012 she decided to concentrate on advanced play.  While not winninmg any competitions she reduced her handicap to 2.5 and her Dynamic Grading has increased from 1512 to 1685.  She reached the final of the Bowdon B-level event again but had to withdraw because of injury.  For the same reason she had to withdraw from the Bowdon B-level weekend tournament.  This cut her playing season by 20% which makes her improvement in 2012 even more of an achievement.

Steve Lewis R.I.P.

23 June 2013 by Bowdon Web Site

Some Personal Memories:

From Martin Granger Brown:

Bowdon has lost a star player, a staunch member and a most loyal supporter in Steve, one of the keenest competitive players I have ever met, and always an agreeable and magnanimous opponent.    His warm demeanour and fortitude throughout a long illness were exemplary.  A lasting legacy from Steve to the Club is worth recording, and may bring a smile to many who are unaware of it.    In his earliest and keenest days as a player, he realised that shooting practice was the key to early improvement and used to drop in on his way to work for an hour or so!    The sound of the hard-hit balls banging against the stops as early as 7.00am must have awoken one of our neighbours who wrote to the Committee seeking respite.    As a result the Club rules were amended so that playing hours are now “09.00 to dusk” rather than “during daylight hours”,  and we can all sleep soundly in our beds, without feeling guilty that we are wasting valuable time for practice with the larks!

From Barry Keen:

I first met Steve when he started playing Croquet after joining the nuclear design company at Radbroke Hall near Knutsford in 1971.  He also played his first games at Bowdon that year when I organised a weekend tournament jointly between the Knutsford club and Bowdon. The Knutsford club ceased to exist in 1972 and Steve drifted away from the game until the late 70’s when he became a Bowdon member.  He rapidly improved in the eighties, winning the Silver Box twice, and played in the Open Championships and the first World Championship.  He then gave up croquet to spend time with his family having achieved a handicap of -1.
He took up croquet again when he rejoined Bowdon in 2003 and was soon playing at his old handicap of -1.  Steve was a keen supporter of the Wednesday competition, winning the season competition three times.  As his illness progressed his attendance on Wednesday dropped off until his last visits a year ago.  Steve will always be remembered for his unique swinging style which allowed him to hit the ball probably harder than any other player.  Woe betide anyone who put themselves in line with one of his shots.  He had an intense will to win but belied it with a generous spirit towards his opponents.  In all the years I have known him, I have never heard a cross word or negative comment from him, and when he lost a game, he always said, most sincerely, “well done”.  The club has lost a fine player and a gentleman.

From John Saxby:

Dear Judith,

I write to you on behalf of myself, the committee and all our club members to offer our heartfelt condolence for your loss of Steve.

We will never appreciate how much suffering you and Steve endured in these last few years but we all witnessed Steve’s stoicism as he continued to join us every Wednesday despite being in such distress.

I must also thank you for allowing us to join you at his funeral last week it was a very moving experience and your floral tribute brought tears to our eyes.

Steve was a formidable competitor but his patience on a Wednesday when sharing a lawn or playing against fairly disorganized beginners was exemplary. He was unfailingly polite and usually managed to win even when deprived of his fair time on the lawn. I think all the Wednesday players would agree he was our favourite player, we loved him dearly and sorely miss him!

Our thoughts and prayers will be with you for some time to come.

Best Wishes

John Saxby (Hon. Secretary)
