Paul Rigge and James Hawkins entertained a group of around 80 physicists from the University of Manchester on 24th July.
This was a repeat of last year’s golf croquet awayday for the research department. Three short lawns were laid out at the Chancellors Hotel in Manchester, players were kept busy for about five hours and the practiced hands didn’t break any mallets! This year, some of the keenest players ventured towards association croquet (or a hybrid garden version of it), with a resolution to head to Bowdon for more competitive play.
After two years, this event seems to be a regular fixture in the Physics Department calendar. The venue is scheduled for redevelopment over the winter, so a new location is being sought for 2020.

The Federation’s second Coach the Coach (CTC) Coaching day was again hosted at Whitehead Park by Bury CC on 13th May. The first course on 13th April was massively oversubscribed.
Don Williamson and Paul Rigge again led the course for Learner Club Coaches from Fylde, Chester, Bowdon & Southport this time, again in bright warm sunshine on superb courts – the joke of the day being, “maybe we should only play croquet on the 13th of each month, since we’ve got great weather for both of these courses”.
Now the examining coaches await the work by the delegates back at their own clubs…
