Wet,wet, wet in Chester

More floods

Chester held a summer social event last Sunday (5th August) at which one of our founder members 35 years ago, Hasting Wang, presented the club with a trophy he himself had won many years ago. The proceedings and afternoon tea started out of doors but were cut short by torrential rain which left our lawns completely flooded with one of our croquet balls being carried away by the flood as it cascaded down to the bowling greens. Everyone was left marooned in the clubhouse crying into their wine glasses.  It must be summer!

2011 Fantastic Year for Chester Croquet

11 July 2011 by David Guyton

New Clubhouse, The Apps Healey Award and Two CA Diplomas for Members

2011 was a wonderful year for Chester, as we attained our long awaited pavilion at the start of the season after 15 years of the horrible hut. The pavilion is in constant use and we are still on speaking terms with the 3 bowling clubs with whom we share it.

The Grand Opening was performed in July by Barry Keen, the Chairman of the CA, in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Chester, sundry Councillors, the Chairman of the NWFed, guests from clubs throughout the North West and club members.

The sun shone and guests were still playing croquet at 5.45pm when we started taking down themarquee. Barry Keen also presented the CA’s Apps Healey Award to the club as the club with 3 or 4 lawns which hadmade most progress over the past 2 years.

Recently 2 of our members, Mollie McBride and Janet Davies were awarded CA Diplomas for services to croquet (particularly at club level) over the years.

Justin_Brightmore_MillHcp07Barry_Keen_MillHcp07Last weekend Chester Croquet Club hosted the annual North West Millennium Handicap Tournament at Westminster Park. This was the second time that Chester has hosted the event. Thirteen players from five North West clubs, Bowdon, Bury, Chester, Fylde and Southport, took part in the competition. Each participant played three 3 hour full lawn matches on Saturday and two 3 hour matches on Sunday. After a grey, chilly and blustery start on Saturday morning the weather improved during the afternoon and evening and playing conditions on Sunday were ideal.

Three competitors won four out their five matches and the final result was determined on points. Justin Brightmore of Bury, playing off a handicap of 12, achieved first place and David Guyton of Chester, with a handicap of 14, came second. Barry Keen, Chairman of the North West Regional Federation of the Croquet Association, presented the awards at the end of the tournament. He complimented the winners and Chester Croquet Club for hosting the event and contrasted the pleasant conditions this year with the cancellation caused by heavy rain last year.
